Remaining Humble During Times of Success

Remaining Humble During Times of Success

Main Texts: Deuteronomy 8:10–18; James 4:6–10; Proverbs 16:18

Introduction

Success brings blessings, opportunities, and influence—but it also brings spiritual dangers. One of the greatest dangers of success is pride. Many people begin their journey depending completely upon God, but after experiencing success they gradually become self-reliant.

They forget the prayers they once prayed.

They neglect the disciplines that once sustained them.

They begin to believe that their accomplishments are solely the result of their own abilities.

Throughout Scripture, God repeatedly warns His people against forgetting Him in seasons of prosperity. Success should deepen our gratitude, not diminish our dependence.

The Danger of Pride

Pride whispers:

“I achieved this alone.”
“I deserve all the credit.”
“I no longer need God’s help.”

Pride leads to:

  • Spiritual blindness.
  • Self-confidence.
  • Poor decisions.
  • Broken relationships.
  • Eventual downfall.

The Bible declares:

“Pride goeth before destruction, and an haughty spirit before a fall.”

Cultivating Humility

Humility recognizes:

Everything I have comes from God.

Humility thanks God for:

  • Every promotion.
  • Every opportunity.
  • Every accomplishment.
  • Every relationship.
  • Every answered prayer.

A humble heart continues seeking God regardless of success.

Using Success to Bless Others

God blesses believers so they can become a blessing.

Success provides opportunities to:

  • Support missions.
  • Help the needy.
  • Mentor younger believers.
  • Encourage others.
  • Advance God’s Kingdom.

Blessings become dangerous when they terminate upon ourselves.

Biblical Illustration

King Uzziah experienced remarkable success because God helped him.

However, as his influence grew, pride entered his heart.

His pride eventually led to disobedience and judgment.

His story reminds us that humility must increase as success increases.

Application
  • Thank God daily for your blessings.
  • Remain teachable.
  • Use your success to serve others.
  • Guard your heart against pride.

Shalom!
