Discerning The Voices That Compete For Your Attention

Discerning The Voices That Compete For Your Attention

Main Texts: John 10:27; 1 Kings 19:11–13; Philippians 4:8; Psalm 46:10

Introduction

One of the greatest challenges of modern life is noise.

Not simply physical noise, but mental and spiritual noise.

We wake up and immediately check our phones.

Notifications arrive.

Messages appear.

News updates come.

Videos play.

People offer opinions.

Social media presents thousands of competing voices.

Before we have even prayed, our minds may already be filled with the voices of other people.

The result can be spiritual confusion.

We become so accustomed to noise that silence becomes uncomfortable.

But sometimes we need to step away from the noise so that we can hear God more clearly.

Jesus Said His Sheep Know His Voice

Jesus said:
“My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me.”

A relationship with God involves learning His ways and recognizing what agrees with His character and Word.

The more familiar you become with Scripture, the easier it becomes to recognize teachings that contradict it.

Not Every Voice Deserves Your Attention

You do not have to respond to every opinion.

You do not need to participate in every argument.

You do not need to consume every piece of content.

Wisdom knows what to reject.

Sometimes spiritual maturity means saying:

“This does not deserve space in my mind.”

The Elijah Illustration

Elijah experienced an extraordinary encounter with God.

There was a great wind.

There was an earthquake.

There was a fire.

Yet Scripture says God was not revealed to Elijah through those dramatic events.

Then came a still, small voice.

The lesson is powerful.

God does not always speak through the loudest thing around you.

Sometimes we need quietness to recognize His direction.

Guarding Your Mind

Philippians 4:8 gives believers a powerful filter for their thoughts.

We should intentionally dwell on things that are:

  • True.
  • Honest.
  • Just.
  • Pure.
  • Lovely.
  • Good.
  • Worthy of praise.

Not everything that attracts our attention deserves our meditation.

Practical Digital Discernment

Ask yourself:

  • What am I constantly watching?
  • What voices am I allowing to shape my beliefs?
  • Does this content strengthen my faith or weaken it?
  • Am I spending more time consuming opinions than Scripture?
  • Does my online life reflect my commitment to Christ?

Your attention is valuable.

Do not give everyone access to your mind.

Biblical Illustration: Samuel

When Samuel was young, he heard God’s voice but initially did not recognize it.

Eli helped him understand that God was calling him.

Samuel learned to respond:

“Speak; for thy servant heareth.”

Discernment grows as we learn to recognize God’s direction.

Application
  • Create regular periods of quiet prayer.
  • Reduce unnecessary spiritual noise.
  • Be selective about what you consume.
  • Spend more time in God’s Word than in the opinions of people.
  • Ask the Holy Spirit for wisdom.

Shalom!
