Christ has Already Won the Victory

Main Texts: Colossians 2:13–15; John 19:30; Hebrews 2:14–15; Revelation 12:10–11

One of the greatest truths every Christian must understand is that we are not fighting for victory—we are fighting from victory. This truth changes the way believers face temptation, trials, suffering, spiritual warfare, and everyday challenges.

Many Christians live as though Satan is equal to God and that the outcome of the spiritual battle is uncertain. As a result, they live in fear, discouragement, and constant defeat. However, the Bible clearly teaches that Jesus Christ has already secured the decisive victory through His death, burial, and resurrection.

When Jesus cried from the cross,

“It is finished.”

He was not declaring defeat.

He was announcing victory.

The work of redemption had been completed.

The debt of sin had been paid.

The power of death had been broken.

The authority of Satan had been defeated.

The gates of eternal life had been opened to all who believe.

Every believer must learn to live in the light of Christ’s finished work rather than in the shadow of fear and failure.

The Cross Was God’s Greatest Victory

To the world, the crucifixion looked like defeat.

Jesus was arrested.

He was mocked.

He was beaten.

He was nailed to a cross.

His disciples fled.

His enemies celebrated.

Everything appeared lost.

Yet what looked like Satan’s greatest victory became his greatest defeat.

Paul explains in Colossians 2:15 that through the cross Jesus:

• Disarmed principalities and powers.
• Publicly triumphed over them.
• Defeated the kingdom of darkness.

The enemy thought he had won.

Instead, God fulfilled His eternal plan of salvation.

The Resurrection Proved Christ’s Victory

The resurrection was God’s declaration that Jesus is Lord.

Death could not hold Him.

The grave could not contain Him.

Satan could not stop Him.

On the third day Christ arose in power and glory.

Because Jesus lives:

• We have forgiveness.
• We have eternal life.
• We have hope.
• We have victory.

Christianity is founded upon an empty tomb.

Our Savior is alive forevermore.

Our Victory Is Found in Christ

Notice that Scripture says:

“More than conquerors through Him.”

Victory is not found:

• Through human strength.
• Through positive thinking.
• Through religious activities.

Victory comes only through Jesus Christ.

Apart from Him we are weak.

In Him we overcome.

The Enemy Is Defeated but Still Active

Although Satan has been defeated, he continues to oppose believers until Christ’s final return.

His greatest weapon today is deception.

He wants believers to:

• Forget who they are in Christ.
• Live in fear.
• Feel condemned.
• Doubt God’s promises.
• Surrender to discouragement.

But believers overcome by remembering Christ’s finished work.

Biblical Illustration

David defeated Goliath with confidence because he believed God had already given the victory.

His faith rested not in his sling but in the Lord.

Likewise, Christians face every battle knowing Christ has already overcome.

Lessons for Today

A victorious believer understands:

• Jesus has already conquered sin.
• Jesus defeated death.
• Satan is a defeated enemy.
• Our confidence rests in Christ.

Application

• Begin each day thanking God for Christ’s victory.
• Refuse to live in fear.
• Remember that your identity is found in Jesus.
• Face every challenge with confidence in God’s promises.
