True Leadership Begins With Christlike Character

Introduction

Leadership is one of God’s greatest gifts to humanity. Every family, church, business, school, organization, and nation depends upon leaders. Yet the world’s understanding of leadership often differs greatly from God’s design. Society usually measures leadership by position, wealth, popularity, authority, influence, or power. The Bible, however, measures leadership by character, humility, faithfulness, and service.

Many people desire the privileges of leadership but are unwilling to embrace its responsibilities. They seek recognition without sacrifice, authority without accountability, and influence without integrity. Jesus completely transformed this way of thinking. He taught that greatness in God’s Kingdom is not found in being served but in serving others.

Whether you supervise hundreds of employees, teach a classroom, lead a ministry, manage a business, or simply influence your family and friends, God has entrusted you with leadership. Leadership is not reserved for those with impressive titles. Every Christian is called to influence others toward righteousness.

The greatest leaders are first faithful followers of Christ. Before God entrusts public influence, He develops private character. Before He elevates a person outwardly, He transforms them inwardly.

What Is Biblical Leadership?

Biblical leadership is the God-given responsibility of influencing others through Christlike character, humble service, and faithful stewardship for the glory of God.

Leadership is influence.

Every believer influences someone.

Parents influence children.

Teachers influence students.

Managers influence employees.

Pastors influence congregations.

Older believers influence younger believers.

Even friends influence one another.

The question is not whether you have influence.

The question is whether your influence points people toward Christ.

Jesus: The Perfect Example of Leadership

Jesus possessed all authority in heaven and on earth, yet He demonstrated remarkable humility.

He:

• Was born in a humble manger.
• Served the poor.
• Touched lepers.
• Welcomed children.
• Was patient with His disciples.
• Was compassionate toward sinners.
• Was willing to wash His disciples’ feet.

Although He was Lord of all, He became the servant of all.

True Christian leadership reflects the heart of Jesus.

Character Comes Before Competence

The world often promotes talented people regardless of their character.

God first examines the heart.

A leader may possess:

• Great intelligence.
• Exceptional skills.
• Outstanding communication.

Yet without integrity, those gifts eventually become destructive.

Character determines whether success becomes a blessing or a danger.

Essential Qualities of Godly Leaders

Godly leaders demonstrate:

• Humility.
• Honesty.
• Wisdom.
• Compassion.
• Faithfulness.
• Self-control.
• Courage.
• Dependability.

These qualities are developed through daily fellowship with God.

Biblical Illustration

Moses did not begin as Israel’s leader.

God first spent forty years preparing him in the wilderness.

Before leading a nation, Moses learned humility, dependence, patience, and obedience.

God values preparation more than promotion.

Application

• Ask God to develop Christlike character.
• Seek opportunities to serve rather than to be recognized.
• Lead by example.
• Remember that true greatness is measured by faithfulness.
