Brokenness: When God Uses What Feels Ruined

Brokenness: When God Uses What Feels Ruined

Brokenness is not something we seek. It usually comes through loss, failure, disappointment, or sin. It’s the moment when our strength runs out and our carefully built image cracks. Yet in Scripture, brokenness is often the place where God begins His deepest work.

“The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit.”
Psalm 34:18

Brokenness Strips Away Illusion

Brokenness removes the lie that we are self-sufficient. When everything is going well, it’s easy to rely on our abilities, plans, and control. But brokenness exposes how fragile those things really are.

“The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart, O God, you will not despise.” Psalm 51:17

Brokenness Is Not the Same as Hopelessness

Brokenness says, “I can’t fix this on my own.” Hopelessness says, “Nothing can fix this.” Scripture never leads us to hopelessness. Instead, it invites us to bring our broken pieces to God.

“He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.” Psalm 147:3

Jesus Was Drawn to the Broken

Throughout the Gospels, Jesus consistently moved toward broken people. The sick, the sinful, the rejected, and the weary were never pushed away.

“Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” Matthew 11:28

Brokenness Produces Dependence

“My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” 2 Corinthians 12:9

Brokenness Can Become a Place of Renewal

“Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me.” Psalm 51:10

Closing Thought

Brokenness is not the end of the story. In God’s hands, it becomes the soil where grace grows.

“Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.” Matthew 5:3
