Called to be Light in a Dark World

Main Texts: Matthew 5:13–16; Philippians 2:14–16; Ephesians 5:8–10

Introduction

Jesus did not save us merely so that we could escape darkness. He saved us so that we could become light in the darkness.

When Jesus told His disciples, “Ye are the light of the world,” He was giving them an identity and a responsibility. A light exists to shine. A lamp that is hidden has failed to fulfill its purpose.

The same is true of Christianity.

God has placed believers in homes, workplaces, schools, businesses, communities, and different areas of society so that His character can be seen through them.

We live in a world where dishonesty can be normalized, immorality can be celebrated, hatred can spread quickly, selfishness can become a lifestyle, and truth can be rejected. Yet God has not called His people to run away from society. He has called us to live differently within it.

Being a Christian means carrying the presence and character of Christ wherever we go.

Your office is an opportunity to shine.

Your classroom is an opportunity to shine.

Your business is an opportunity to shine.

Your neighborhood is an opportunity to shine.

Your family is an opportunity to shine.

The question is not whether darkness exists around us. The question is whether we are willing to shine within it.

Light Has a Purpose

Light reveals what darkness hides.

When a room is dark, you cannot clearly see what is around you. Once light enters, things become visible.

In the same way, a Christian life should reveal:

• Truth where there is deception.
• Love where there is hatred.
• Integrity where there is corruption.
• Purity where there is immorality.
• Hope where there is despair.
• Faith where there is fear.

We are not called to condemn everyone around us.

We are called to demonstrate another way of living.

Jesus Is the Source of Our Light

We must remember that Christians do not produce spiritual light independently.

Jesus said:

“I am the light of the world.” — John 8:12

Christ is the source.

We reflect what we receive from Him.

Just as the moon reflects the light of the sun, believers are called to reflect the character of Christ.

The closer we walk with Jesus, the more clearly His character should be visible through our lives.

Darkness Should Not Change Our Character

One of the greatest tests of Christian maturity is whether we can remain faithful when surrounded by people who do not share our convictions.

It is easy to be a Christian among Christians.

The greater challenge is being a Christian when everyone around you is compromising.

Can you remain honest when others are dishonest?

Can you remain pure when impurity is celebrated?

Can you remain kind when others are cruel?

Can you remain faithful when others mock your convictions?

That is what it means to shine.

Biblical Illustration: Joseph

Joseph lived in an environment filled with temptation, injustice, and pagan culture.

Yet he remained faithful to God.

He served faithfully in Potiphar’s house.

He maintained integrity in prison.

He demonstrated wisdom before Pharaoh.

Joseph did not need a perfect environment to remain faithful.

His relationship with God was stronger than his surroundings.

Application

• Ask God to make your life a visible testimony of Christ.
• Refuse to allow your environment to determine your character.
• Look for opportunities to demonstrate God’s love.
• Remember that your conduct may be someone’s first impression of Christianity.
