Dwelling in the Secret Place: A Life of Intimacy with God

Introduction:

The “secret place” is where God meets with us in intimacy, a place not marked by geography but by spiritual posture. It’s where distractions fall away and communion with the Father deepens. Psalm 91:1 tells us:

“He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.” (Psalm 91:1 NKJV)

This sacred place is open to every believer who desires God above all else. It’s a place of refuge, revelation, renewal, and relationship.

Biblical Verses on the Secret Place:

  • Matthew 6:6 (NIV) – “But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.”
  • Psalm 27:5 (ESV) – “For he will hide me in his shelter in the day of trouble; he will conceal me under the cover of his tent; he will lift me high upon a rock.”
  • Colossians 3:3 (NKJV) – “For you died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God.”
  • Psalm 91:9-10 (NLT) – “If you make the Lord your refuge, if you make the Most High your shelter, no evil will conquer you…”
  • Exodus 33:11 (NIV) – “The Lord would speak to Moses face to face, as one speaks to a friend.”

10 Ways to Stay in the Secret Place:

  1. Prioritize Daily Solitude with God
Make time each day to be alone with God—no distractions, just your Bible, prayer, and worship.
  2. Create a Sacred Routine
Whether morning or night, consistent time and space signal your heart’s readiness for intimacy.
  3. Meditate on the Word
Chew on Scripture slowly, allowing the Holy Spirit to speak. (Joshua 1:8)
  4. Keep a Journal of Encounters
Write what God reveals. Journaling helps you track spiritual growth and divine whispers.
  5. Practice Silence and Stillness
Sometimes the best prayer is stillness. “Be still, and know that I am God” (Psalm 46:10).
  6. Fast Regularly
Fasting disconnects you from the world and reconnects you with God.
  7. Guard Your Heart
Avoid sin, bitterness, and spiritual clutter. The pure in heart will see God (Matthew 5:8).
  8. Worship Deeply
Worship invites God’s presence. Sing, play music, or speak words of adoration.
  9. Live with God-Consciousness
A secret place life flows into your day—acknowledge Him in every moment. (Proverbs 3:6)
  10. Obey Promptly
When God speaks, respond. Obedience keeps the lines of intimacy clear and open.

What Happens When a Believer Misses the Secret Place:

  1. Spiritual Dryness and Emptiness
Psalm 63:1 (NIV) – “You, God, are my God, earnestly I seek you; I thirst for you… in a dry and parched land where there is no water.”
  2. Decreased Sensitivity to the Holy Spirit
Isaiah 30:21 (NIV) – “Whether you turn to the right or to the left, your ears will hear a voice behind you, saying, ‘This is the way; walk in it.’”
  3. Vulnerability to Temptation and Sin
Matthew 26:41 – “Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation.”
  4. Loss of Peace and Clarity
Philippians 4:6–7 – Peace comes through “prayer and supplication.”
  5. Strained Spiritual Authority and Power
Mark 1:35 – Jesus’ power came from His intimacy with the Father.
  6. Broken Fellowship, Not Relationship
James 4:8 – “Draw near to God and He will draw near to you.”
  7. Missed Divine Assignments
John 5:19 – Jesus did only what He saw the Father doing.
  8. Weak Witness and Burnout
Trying to serve without being filled leads to burnout. The secret place refreshes and empowers us.

Encouragement:

God always welcomes us back. Like the father of the prodigal son, He waits eagerly for our return—not to scold us, but to restore and embrace.

Conclusion:

The secret place isn’t about perfection; it’s about pursuit. God invites us into continual fellowship. It’s not a Sunday activity—it’s a lifestyle. Let Psalm 91 be your anthem, and let your life be hidden in the shadow of the Almighty.

  1. Thy word will I hid in my heart that I may not SIN AGAINST YOU

    1. Once the word is carefully obeyed and digested , we will be promoted to live by the word ..

  2. As the Man of God had rightly spelt out to us, there are very serious consequences that lust leaves a man/woman both young and old that engages or permits/agrees with even the slightest thoughts. It is like an indelible mark that stains a believer and exposes his vulnerability unto evil spirits.
Such a one can be vulnerable to attacks and spirits can begin to perch on such a one and pour out their perverted nature into such person(s).

To agree with what Lust offers is a Great Disservice to oneself. It is a big disengagement from the path of Salvation and into a path where destruction is inevitable.

The funniest part of it is that Lust (Lustfully activities) never shows up as something that will pull a hair away from you, but I tell you, it can kill a man and drive him to Lake.

The Answer as Pastor had mentioned above is to FLEE!

No waiting to negotiate it, there is no Bend around Lust, it is an high way to loosing the Salvation of both the spirit and the soul.

May God help us all to be attuned to what the Spirit of God is sounding in the Spirit and Help us to strengthen our resolve against lust and all its evil schemes, in Jesus Name.

    Amen.
