God Is Love — The Source of All True Love
Love is one of the most spoken-about words in the world, yet one of the most misunderstood. Culture defines love through emotion, attraction, or personal satisfaction. When love feels good, it is celebrated; when it becomes costly, it is abandoned. Scripture, however, introduces a radically different definition of love — one that begins not with human feeling, but with God Himself.
The Bible does not say God has love; it says God is love.
“Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love.” — 1 John 4:8
This truth changes everything. If God is love, then love is not defined by culture, preference, or emotion — it is defined by God’s character.
Body: Biblical Teaching
God is the source of love. All genuine love flows from Him.
“Dear friends, let us love one another, for love comes from God.” — 1 John 4:7
Human love is limited, inconsistent, and often conditional. God’s love is eternal, faithful, and holy.
“The Lord is compassionate and gracious, slow to anger, abounding in love.” — Psalm 103:8
God’s love existed before creation and will endure beyond it.
“I have loved you with an everlasting love.” — Jeremiah 31:3
Illustration
A river does not create its own water — it flows from a source. When the source dries up, the river disappears. In the same way, when people attempt to love apart from God, love becomes shallow, selfish, and unstable. Only when love flows from God does it remain pure and enduring.
Application
- Stop defining love by feelings alone
- Seek to know God more deeply, because love flows from knowing Him
- Measure love by God’s character, not personal comfort
Reflection & Closing
Ask yourself:
- Is my understanding of love shaped more by culture or Scripture?
- Am I drawing love from God or trying to produce it myself?
“We love because He first loved us.” — 1 John 4:19
