Knowing God Personally – Relationship Over Religion

Opening Thought

Religion is about rules. Relationship is about connection. God didn’t create us to follow rituals; He created us to know Him and walk with Him.

Ask the group: What’s the difference between knowing about someone and actually knowing them?

You can know a lot about someone and still not have a relationship with them. That’s what happens to many people with God.

Main Teaching Points
1. God Wants a Relationship, Not Routine

Bible Verse: “Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and dine with him, and he with Me.” – Revelation 3:20

Jesus isn’t waiting for you to be perfect or religious enough. He’s waiting for you to open your heart and spend time with Him. He wants a friendship, not a performance.

Example: Think of a friend you trust—you talk, listen, laugh, and share life. That’s what Jesus wants too.

2. Relationship Changes Everything

Bible Verse: “I no longer call you servants, because a servant does not know his master’s business. Instead, I have called you friends.” – John 15:15

Religion says, ‘I have to serve God.’ Relationship says, ‘I get to walk with God.’ When you really know Him, obeying Him stops being a burden—it becomes natural. You don’t pray because you ‘should,’ you pray because you want to talk to Him.

3. Knowing About God vs. Knowing God

Bible Verse: “This is eternal life: that they know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom You have sent.” – John 17:3

Ask: How do we get to know someone personally?

Answer together: Spend time with them. Talk to them. Listen. Learn what matters to them.

That’s how we know God—through prayer, His Word, and everyday life. Not just by showing up at church or following Christian habits.

4. Relationship Brings Real Life

Bible Verse: “Come to Me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” – Matthew 11:28

Religion burns you out trying to be ‘good enough.’ Relationship fills you up because you’re loved as you are. When you walk with Jesus daily, your heart finds peace and purpose.

Practical Challenge for the Week

Ask them to do one of these each day:

  • Spend 5 minutes just talking to God like a friend.
  • Read one verse and ask, “What does this show me about who God is?”
  • Thank God for one thing He’s done in your life.
  • Listen—sit quietly and see what He might be putting on your heart.
Closing Thought

Knowing God personally is not about how ‘religious’ you look. It’s about being real with Him—talking, listening, and walking with Him daily.

God isn’t after your perfection; He’s after your heart. ❤️
