Leading with Courage During Difficult Times

Leading with Courage During Difficult Times

Main Texts: Joshua 1:6–9; 2 Timothy 1:7; Isaiah 41:10

Introduction

Every leader eventually faces moments that require courage. Difficult decisions, criticism, opposition, uncertainty, and pressure are unavoidable. Godly leadership is not the absence of fear but the willingness to obey God despite fear.

Joshua faced the enormous responsibility of leading Israel after Moses’ death. Humanly speaking, the task seemed impossible. Yet God repeatedly encouraged him to be “strong and courageous” because His presence would be with him.

The same promise encourages Christian leaders today.

The Source of Courage

Biblical courage comes from confidence in God.

Leaders become courageous when they remember:

  • God is faithful.
  • God is present.
  • God keeps His promises.
  • God provides wisdom.

Faith replaces fear.

Making Difficult Decisions

Sometimes leaders must:

  • Correct wrongdoing.
  • Defend truth.
  • Make unpopular choices.
  • Protect others.
  • Refuse compromise.

Godly courage chooses obedience over approval.

Responding to Criticism

Every leader will face criticism.

Respond by:

  • Listening humbly.
  • Accepting constructive correction.
  • Ignoring destructive attacks.
  • Continuing faithful service.

Your goal is God’s approval rather than human applause.

Biblical Illustration

Queen Esther risked her life to approach the king on behalf of her people.

Her courage became God’s instrument of deliverance.

Faith often requires courageous obedience.
