Preparing Your Heart to Study the Bible
Main Texts
Psalm 119:18; James 1:21–25; Proverbs 2:1–6
Introduction
Many believers struggle to understand Scripture because they prepare their schedules but not their hearts.
Bible study begins before opening the Bible.
The condition of the heart determines how much benefit is received from God’s Word.
Jesus taught in the Parable of the Sower that the same seed produced different results depending on the condition of the soil.
Likewise, the same Scripture produces different results depending on the condition of the heart.
Essential Heart Attitudes
1. Humility
Pride blocks spiritual understanding.
A teachable heart receives revelation.
God often teaches those who recognize their need for Him.
2. Hunger
People who grow spiritually are hungry for truth.
The deeper your hunger, the greater your growth.
3. Faith
Approach Scripture believing God desires to speak.
Faith opens the door to understanding.
4. Obedience
God reveals truth not merely to satisfy curiosity but to produce obedience.
Understanding increases when application follows.
Pray Before You Study
David prayed:
“Open thou mine eyes, that I may behold wondrous things out of thy law.”
The Holy Spirit is our Teacher.
Bible study should begin with prayer.
Ask God for:
- Understanding
- Wisdom
- Revelation
- Application
Biblical Illustration

Later, Jesus opened their understanding to comprehend Scripture.
Spiritual understanding requires divine illumination.
Application
