“For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.” — 2 Corinthians 5:21 (NKJV)
Introduction
Right standing with God means being justified, accepted, and in a correct relationship with Him. It is not something we can earn through good works or human effort—it is a gift from God through faith in Jesus Christ. This right standing is also called righteousness, and it is the foundation of the Christian life.
What Does Right Standing Mean?
Right standing is a legal term that signifies that a person is no longer guilty before God but declared righteous. In Christ, believers are not only forgiven but are also seen as holy and blameless in God’s sight.
Romans 5:1 — “Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.”
Romans 3:22 — “Even the righteousness of God, through faith in Jesus Christ, to all and on all who believe. For there is no difference.”
Righteousness Is a Gift, Not a Reward
You do not earn right standing with God by going to church, praying more, or being morally perfect. Right standing is imparted by grace and received through faith in Jesus Christ.
Ephesians 2:8–9 — “For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast.”
Titus 3:5 — “Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to His mercy He saved us…”
How Do We Receive Right Standing?
- Believe in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior.
- Repent from sin and accept His gift of righteousness.
- Live daily in the truth of what He has done for you.
John 1:12 — “But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name.”
Philippians 3:9 — “And be found in Him, not having my own righteousness, which is from the law, but that which is through faith in Christ…”
The Benefits of Right Standing
- Peace with God — Romans 5:1
- Bold Access to God’s Presence — Hebrews 4:16
- Freedom from Condemnation — Romans 8:1
- Power to Live Righteously — Romans 6:18
- Eternal Security — John 10:28
Dangers of Rejecting Right Standing
Rejecting or trying to earn righteousness through self-effort leads to legalism, pride, guilt, or spiritual failure. The Jews tried to establish their own righteousness and failed to submit to God’s righteousness.
Romans 10:3 — “For they being ignorant of God’s righteousness, and seeking to establish their own righteousness, have not submitted to the righteousness of God.”
Conclusion
Right standing with God is not based on who you are or what you’ve done, but on who Christ is and what He has done. When you receive Him by faith, you are no longer condemned but accepted, no longer an enemy but a beloved child.
Let your confidence in life and in prayer come from the truth that you are in right standing with God through Christ Jesus.
Prayer Declaration
Father, thank You for giving me the gift of righteousness through Christ. I no longer live under condemnation or guilt. I boldly approach You as Your child, knowing I am accepted and loved. Help me to walk in the power of Your grace, in Jesus’ name. Amen.
