The False Teaching of Human Wisdom Above God’s Word
Main Texts: Colossians 2:8; Proverbs 3:5–7; 1 Corinthians 1:18–25; 2 Timothy 3:16–17
Introduction
Human beings have achieved extraordinary things.
We have advanced technology.
We have scientific discoveries.
We have artificial intelligence.
We have medicine.
We have engineering.
We have education.
These developments can be gifts of God’s common grace and human creativity.
But human intelligence has limitations.
One of the dangers of modern Christianity is allowing human wisdom, philosophy, culture, or personal opinion to become more authoritative than God’s Word.
Knowledge Is Not the Same as Wisdom
A person can possess enormous knowledge and still make foolish moral decisions.
Knowledge tells you what something is.
Wisdom helps you understand how you should live.
Biblical wisdom begins with reverence for God.
Do Not Let Culture Rewrite Scripture
Culture can pressure Christians to reinterpret biblical teaching according to current preferences.
But the Church is not called to reshape God’s Word according to culture.
We are called to allow God’s Word to shape us.
Romans 12:2 teaches us not to conform to the patterns of this world but to be transformed through the renewing of our minds.
The Danger of “I Feel It Is Right”
Personal feelings are not the final authority.
You may feel that something is right.
Another person may feel that it is wrong.
Someone else may have a completely different feeling.
Truth cannot depend entirely on emotion.
Christians must ask:
“What has God revealed?”
Biblical Illustration: King Saul
Saul once received a clear command from God.
Instead of fully obeying, he altered the command according to his own reasoning.
When confronted, he attempted to justify his actions.
Samuel responded with a powerful principle:
“To obey is better than sacrifice.”
Partial obedience is still disobedience.
Human reasoning cannot replace God’s command.
Application
- Do not place personal opinion above Scripture.
- Do not allow trends to determine your convictions.
- Study God’s Word carefully.
- Seek wisdom through prayer.
- Remain humble enough to change your thinking when Scripture corrects you.
Shalom!
