Why Spiritual Discernment is Essential For Every Believer

Introduction

We are living in a world filled with voices.

Every day, people hear opinions from television, social media, friends, colleagues, teachers, influencers, politicians, entertainment, advertisements, and even religious leaders. We are constantly being told what to believe, how to think, what to value, and how to live.

The challenge is no longer simply finding information.

The challenge is knowing which information is true.

A person can have access to thousands of messages every day and still be spiritually confused.

This is why spiritual discernment is so important.

The Christian cannot simply believe something because it sounds convincing. We cannot accept a teaching because a popular person said it. We cannot assume something is true because many people believe it.

We must learn to distinguish between truth and error, wisdom and foolishness, God’s voice and the world’s voice.

Spiritual discernment is the ability to recognize what agrees with God’s truth and what does not.

It is the ability to look beyond appearances and evaluate things through the wisdom of Scripture and the guidance of the Holy Spirit.

What Is Spiritual Discernment?

Discernment is the ability to distinguish between things that may appear similar but are actually different.

For example:

• Truth and error can sound similar.
• Wisdom and foolishness can both sound persuasive.
• Genuine teaching and false teaching can both use Bible verses.
• Good opportunities and dangerous opportunities can sometimes look identical.

Discernment helps us look deeper.

Hebrews 5:14 describes mature believers as those who have their senses trained to discern both good and evil.

This means discernment grows through spiritual maturity.

Discernment Is More Than Intelligence

A highly educated person can still make spiritually foolish decisions.

Intelligence gives you the ability to process information.

Discernment gives you the ability to evaluate that information according to God’s truth.

You can know many facts and still lack wisdom.

That is why Christians must continually seek God.

The Danger of Believing Everything

John gives a serious warning:

“Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God.”

Notice the command:

Do not believe everything. Test it.

This applies to:

• Preaching.
• Prophecy.
• Online Christian content.
• Books.
• Advice.
• Popular teachings.
• Personal opinions.

The question should always be:

“Does this agree with God’s Word?”

Biblical Illustration: The Bereans

Acts 17:11 tells us that the Bereans listened carefully to Paul’s teaching, but they also searched the Scriptures daily to determine whether what they were hearing was true.

They did not reject teaching.

They did not blindly accept teaching.

They examined it through Scripture.

That is biblical discernment.

How Discernment Develops

Spiritual discernment grows through:

• Studying Scripture.
  Prayer.
• Walking with the Holy Spirit.
• Obeying what God has already revealed.
• Learning from mature believers.
• Practicing wisdom in everyday decisions.

You cannot develop discernment while continually neglecting God’s Word.

Application

Ask yourself:

• What voices influence my thinking most?
• Do I test what I hear against Scripture?
• Am I easily influenced by popular opinions?
• Do I pray for wisdom before making important decisions?

This week, ask God:

“Lord, teach me to recognize truth and reject deception.”
