The Fruit of Self-Control and a Life That Glorifies God
Main Texts: Titus 2:11–12; 1 Corinthians 9:24–27; Romans 6:12–14
Introduction
The final aspect of spiritual fruit is self-control.
Self-control is often the fruit that protects all the others.
Without self-control:
- Love becomes inconsistent.
- Joy becomes unstable.
- Peace becomes fragile.
- Faithfulness becomes difficult.
Self-control reflects the Holy Spirit’s influence over every area of life.
What is Self-Control?
Self-control is the ability to govern desires, emotions, impulses, and actions according to God’s will.
It means choosing obedience even when feelings suggest otherwise.
Mature believers do not allow emotions to become masters.
Instead, they submit emotions to God’s truth.
Areas Requiring Self-Control
Thoughts
A mature believer guards the mind.
Not every thought deserves acceptance.
Words
Many relationships have been damaged through uncontrolled speech.
Self-control helps believers speak wisely.
Emotions
Anger, fear, jealousy, and anxiety must be surrendered to God.
Habits
Spiritual growth requires discipline in:
- Prayer
- Bible study
- Stewardship
- Time management
Paul’s Example
Paul compared Christian living to an athlete’s training.
Athletes discipline themselves to win temporary rewards.
Believers practice discipline for eternal rewards.
Paul understood that spiritual growth requires intentional self-control.
The Goal of Spiritual Fruit
The purpose of spiritual fruit is not personal recognition.
The goal is to glorify God.
When people observe:
- Love
- Joy
- Peace
- Patience
- Kindness
- Goodness
- Faithfulness
- Gentleness
- Self-control
They see evidence of Christ’s transforming power.
Biblical Illustration
Joseph consistently demonstrated self-control.
When tempted by Potiphar’s wife, he chose obedience over pleasure.
Years later, that integrity positioned him for leadership and influence.
His character protected his destiny.
Final Application
- Surrender every area of life to the Holy Spirit.
- Practice daily discipline.
- Pursue Christlike character above personal success.
- Allow the fruit of the Spirit to grow continually.
- Live in a way that brings glory to God.
Shalom!
