Overcoming Hindrances to Prayer
Main Texts
Matthew 26:41; Hebrews 12:1–2; James 4:8
Introduction
Every believer encounters obstacles to prayer.
The enemy understands the power of prayer and works diligently to distract believers from it.
Many Christians desire a stronger prayer life but become frustrated because of recurring struggles.
Understanding common hindrances helps us overcome them.
Common Hindrances
1. Distractions
Modern life is filled with noise.
Phones, entertainment, responsibilities, and social media compete for attention.
A distracted life often produces a distracted prayer life.
2. Spiritual Laziness
The flesh naturally resists spiritual disciplines.
Prayer requires intentional effort.
3. Unconfessed Sin
Sin affects fellowship with God.
Though God’s love remains constant, sin can hinder intimacy.
4. Discouragement
Sometimes believers stop praying because answers seem delayed.
But delayed answers do not mean ignored prayers.
Biblical Illustration
The disciples repeatedly struggled to stay awake while Jesus prayed in Gethsemane.
Their experience reminds us that spiritual weakness must be confronted intentionally.
