Understanding the Danger of Pride
Pride is a subtle and dangerous enemy of the soul. It hides in achievements, disguises itself as confidence, and feeds on comparison. While the world may celebrate pride, Scripture warns us that pride leads to destruction. As believers, we are called not to exalt ourselves but to walk humbly before our God (Micah 6:8).
Proverbs 16:18 – “Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall.”
James 4:6 – “God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble.”
1 John 2:16 – “For all that is in the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life—is not of the Father but is of the world.”
Pride breaks fellowship with God, closes our hearts to correction, and damages relationships. It’s the very sin that led to Satan’s fall (Isaiah 14:12–15) and still seeks to dethrone God in our hearts.
Signs of Pride in the Heart
- A refusal to admit wrong or apologize.
- Feeling superior to others.
- Being easily offended or defensive.
- Seeking recognition or praise constantly.
- Resisting godly counsel or instruction.

Biblical Steps to Bury Pride
- Acknowledge the Sin of Pride
Proverbs 11:2 – “When pride comes, then comes shame; but with the humble is wisdom.”
Confession is the first step to freedom. Pride thrives in denial; humility begins with truth. - Submit to God’s Authority
James 4:7 – “Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.”
Surrender your will, your plans, and your need to control outcomes to God. - Develop a Heart of Gratitude
1 Thessalonians 5:18 – “In everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.”
Gratitude shifts focus from self to God, reminding us of His grace, not our merit. - Embrace Servanthood
Philippians 2:5–8 – “Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus… who humbled Himself and became obedient to the point of death.”
Jesus modeled true humility. Serve others in love, without seeking recognition. - Surround Yourself with Accountability
Proverbs 27:6 – “Faithful are the wounds of a friend…”
Invite godly friends or mentors to lovingly correct you when pride arises. - Meditate on God’s Greatness, Not Your Own
Isaiah 66:2 – “This is the one I esteem: he who is humble and contrite in spirit, and trembles at my word.”
Stay in the Word. Let the majesty of God remind you how small we are without Him. - Fast and Pray Regularly
Fasting helps crucify the flesh and reminds us of our dependence on God.
Psalm 35:13 – “I humbled my soul with fasting…”
Conclusion: The Path of Humility
Humility is not thinking less of yourself; it’s thinking of yourself less and God more. Pride exalts self; humility exalts Christ. When we bury pride, we make room for God’s grace to work in and through us. The Holy Spirit empowers us to walk the low road—the path Jesus walked, which leads to life, peace, and spiritual authority.
